Captain Maurice de Florimont (Allan Forrest), a French Army intelligence officer, is captured by Arab nationalists while on an espionage mission. His sweetheart Diane Duval (Betty Compson) is also taken prisoner. Both are tortured by Kassim Ben Ali (Otto Matiesen), leader of the Arab nationalists, but they refuse to divulge any information. They are finally rescued by French troops who storm the fortress and kill Kassim.

After a short split prologue showing riches as the root of evil in ancient and modern times, the film settles into 1914 France, where the Orient Express is about to be wrecked when a bridge washes out. Among those on board are Al and Travis, Americans who are traveling Europe spending Travis’ money, and Marie, a German girl. The boys save Marie after the wreck and Travis falls in love with her. When World War I breaks out Al wants to enlist, but Travis can’t, feeling loyal to Marie, a German. By 1917 Al has enlisted, and Travis follows him shortly after marrying Marie. Accused of being a German spy by a Russian agent, she is sentenced to die but is recognized by Travis, who is part of the firing squad. The town they are in is shelled and they are all trapped underground, during which a minister makes a lengthy parallel to ancient times when the King of Akkad persecuted his subjects and defied Jehovah, who finally sends a flood to wipe out mankind, except for Noah and his family, whom he has instructed to build an ark and fill it with two of every creature on earth.

Joseph gets a slap from the major… The jovial postman has brought a letter from America. Joseph has the offer of a job in the States. But getting there is so expensive… It’s Mother Bernle’s birthday and most of the town gathers for the dancing. Mother gives Joseph the money she has secreted away. He leaves for the USA… It is "Der Tag", The Day when war is declared. Franz and Johann are excited about their new uniforms. But America is still neutral. Joseph runs the German-American Delicatessen with his new wife Annabelle. The reports of the first German battles with the Russians are good. So why does the postman carry a black-edged letter for Mother Bernle? When America does enter the war, Joseph enlists and meets his friend, the iceman from the deli… Times are very bad in Burgendorf. Von Stomm accuses Mother Bernle: she is the "mother of a traitor"…
